Andy Reid Roundup: Hollywood, Samaje, JuJu and in-game interviews

Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid met with the media via Zoom on Friday — six days before the Chiefs open the season against the Baltimore Ravens. Kansas City has entered "regular-season mode," meaning they are treating Friday as if it were a Monday. In his opening statement, Reid noted that he anticipates a "battle royal" against the Ravens, describing the matchups between the two teams as "knock-down, drag-out." With that, he emphasized that Kansas City needs ball security to emerge victorious. Then Reid took questions, which we have rounded up in four takeaways: Reid explained why the Chiefs signed running back Samaje Perine and brought back wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster. He started with the addition of the running back. "We all know what he did to us when he was at Cincinnati with that screen play," started Reid, referencing this play: "Samae has done this over his career where he's been a phenomenal third-

Andy Reid Reveals JuJu Smith-Schuster’s Status For Week 1

(Photo by Carmen Mandato/Getty Images) The Kansas City Chiefs brought back a familiar face. Their pursuit of a third consecutive Super Bowl has left them to leave no stone unturned when it comes to giving Patrick Mahomes more weapons. That's why, even though he's failed to establish himself since leaving the Pittsburgh Steelers, they gave JuJu Smith-Schuster another opportunity to win a ring. With that in mind, HC Andy Reid confirmed that the recently-cut wide receiver could be available for their season opener vs. the Baltimore Ravens on Thursday (via Kansas City): "I think yes, absolutely. Yeah, I think so," Reid said when asked if Smith-Schuster could be available for Week 1. Smith-Schuster didn't make a huge impact for the Chiefs in the regular season, but he did make some big plays for them when it mattered the most. He will provide some depth behind Marquise 'Hollywood' Brown, Xavier Worthy, and Rashee Rice. And while he may not see t

Brett Veach says Hollywood Brown is ‘trending in the right direction’

Going into the offseason, most observers would have identified the Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver group as one of the NFL's worst. But after the acquisition of free agent wide receiver Hollywood Brown (and the team's decision to use its first-round draft pick on speedy Texas wideout Xavier Worthy), it was starting to look like general manager Brett Veach had put together yet another single-season turnaround of a position group. The excitement from those moves was muted on the first offensive play of the preseason campaign — when Brown suffered a sternoclavicular injury similar to the one that kept Tyreek Hill off the field for four games at the beginning of the 2019 season. Later reports indicated that Brown could be out for as many as six weeks, which could cause him to miss the first two or three games of the season. So Brown's injury timeline was a topic of conversation on Thursday when Veach met with local reporters on a Zoom call. "I don't like tal

Andy Reid Warns Media About In-Game Interviews This Season

(Photo by David Eulitt/Getty Images) The Kansas City Chiefs are on the quest for a third consecutive Super Bowl win. That has never happened in the history of the NFL. So, you might have to forgive Chiefs head coach Andy Reid if he is not in the best mood during an in-game interview this season. The 66-year-old shared his opinion recently with the Kansas City media about the prospect of doing league-mandated in-game interviews. "I'm sure I'm not gonna tickle anybody's fancy there with these interviews…I'm gonna do it but don't expect much," Reid said. AFC Team Is Getting The Most Bets To Win Super Bowl This Season

(Photo by Ronald Martinez/Getty Images) Never has an NFL team won three Super Bowls in a row. However, despite history not being on their side, the fans believe the Chiefs are about to enter the history books. As shown by ESPN BET on X, Andy Reid's team currently has the most bets to win Super Bowl LIX. The Chiefs lead the pack with 13% of the wagers, followed by the Detroit Lions (9%), Baltimore Ravens (7%), Cincinnati Bengals (7%), and San Francisco 49ers (7%). Truth be told, it's hard to think of a team that's above the Chiefs right now. We might think of teams like the Cincinnati Bengals or perhaps the New York Jets as their biggest threats in the AFC, wher

Arrowheadlines: Brett Veach has no regrets over Kadarius Toney trade

The latest Chiefs GM Says He'd Do Kadarius Toney Trade Again 'In a Heartbeat'| SI Given the outcome of the trade, would Kansas City general manager Brett Veach be willing to do it again? Veach adamantly told reporters Thursday afternoon via Adam Teicher of ESPN that the answer was yes. "I don't think we're sitting here going for a third straight Super Bowl [championship] had we not made that trade,'' Veach said. "So, from that standpoint, we'd do it all over again in a heartbeat.'' Despite owning just three career regular-season touchdowns, Toney came up big for the Chiefs in Super Bowl LVII with a 65-yard punt return and a five-yard touchdown catch—both in the fourth quarter of Kansas City's 38–35 win over the Philadelphia Eagles. 10 Biggest Questions: Can the Chiefs get Travis Kelce to the finish line?

Heading into the Kansas City Chiefs' season, I'm continuing my "10 Biggest Questions" series. In the final installment, let's think about how the Chiefs can manage their shoo-in Hall of Fame tight end Travis Kelce in 2024. With modern medicine, recovery and training, athletes in all sports can have much longer careers. Long-tenured superstars like Tom Brady, LeBron James and Serena Williams are among the best-known of many others who can now take advantage of modern training and techniques to extend their playing days. Still, long careers aren't common in professional football — a violent, physically punishing sport. Despite modern advances, the human body can only withstand a certain amount of contact and punishment. There are, however, exceptions. Kansas City tight end Travis Kelce is one of the best examples of added longevity in any sport. Now entering his age-35 season, he is still identified by most observers as the NFL's best tight end — a

Chiefs Are Signing Another Quarterback

(Photo by Peter Aiken/Getty Images) It is safe to say that the Kansas City Chiefs do not need any quarterback help. When you have Patrick Mahomes, you are going to be just fine as a team. However, it doesn't hurt to add some insurance just in case injuries take place or unforeseen circumstances come into effect. That is why the Kansas City Chiefs decided to sign former Patriots starting quarterback Bailey Zappe. According to insider Jordan Schultz, Zappe will go to the practice squad. Adding a former starter in Zappe is a wise call by both GM Brett Veach and head coach Andy Reid, even if he is just going to the practice squad. A former fourt

Meet the Chiefs’ initial practice squad for the 2024 season

As they prepare to host the Baltimore Ravens on September 5 to kick off the NFL season, the Kansas City Chiefs have announced 16 players signed to their initial practice squad. Practice squads were increased to 16 players during the pandemic, and that appears to be a permanent change. Teams can also sign six players with an unlimited number of accrued professional seasons. Like last season, teams will be allowed to elevate up to two players to their gameday rosters (up to three times for an individual player in the regular season) without the risk of a waiver claim. Clubs retain the ability to protect up to four players from being signed to other 53-man rosters. The Chiefs have used this ability sparingly — generally, when there have been multiple injuries in a position group. Read on to find out more about these players — and why the Chiefs can actually have a 17th player on this year's practice squad. Emani Bailey • RB • 5-7• 202 pounds Bailey joined the Chiefs as an u

Louis Riddick Predicts Which Player Will Win Super Bowl MVP

(Photo by Kevin C. Cox/Getty Images) The Kansas City Chiefs could be on the verge of history this season. They have the opportunity to become the league's first-ever team to win Super Bowls in three consecutive years. With the leadership of MVP quarterback Patrick Mahomes, the sky is the limit for Kansas City this season. Speaking of Mahomes, ESPN analyst and former NFL player Louis Riddick believes No. 15 could have another magical season in 2024. "He's going to win the regular-season MVP…He's going to go to the Super Bowl, and they're going to win it again…He's going to win the Super Bowl MVP," Riddick stated recently on Get Up. .@LRiddickESPN predicts Patrick Mahomes will win regular season MVP, Super Bowl and Super Bowl MVP this season 👀 pic.twitter.com/bjUWLILU3R — Get Up (@GetUpESPN) August 28, 2024 Mahomes has likely already put together a Hall of Fame career in Kansas City. Arrowheadlines: Skyy Moore is one of the winners of cutdown day

The latest NFL roster cuts 2024: Winners, losers from deadline moves | USA Today Skyy Moore A second-round pick of the Kansas City Chiefs once upon a time – aka 2022 – Moore has often garnered positive buzz but never really delivered the goods, catching just 43 passes in two seasons. Yet his roster bubble hasn't burst, even as the champs brought in veteran WR Hollywood Brown, drafted Xavier Worthy in Round 1 and even recycled Mecole Harman and JuJu Smith-Schuster. Moore's margin for error may be down to the nub, but the Chiefs clearly still think enough of him to carry seven wideouts. Adam Sandler Hints At Travis Kelce’s Role In ‘Happy Gilmore’ Sequel

(Photo by David Calvert/Getty Images for American Century Investments) Fresh off a brand new $100 million podcast deal, Jason Kelce and Travis Kelce had actor Adam Sandler on "New Heights" recently to talk about everything from Taylor Swift, to football, to Sandler's upcoming movie, which just so happens to have a role for the Kansas City Chiefs star. Sandler came on the brothers' podcast to discuss the long-awaited "Happy Gilmore 2"  and provided a hint about what the tight end's role might be. "First of all, Travis, we're gonna have fun because the scene you're doing is with so many great golfers, it's gonna be amazing," Sandler said. "You're gonna be funny as hell. The movie itself, it just picks up from an older guy who's played golf a long time, some stuff goes on in his life, he's different. He's a bit of a mess when you meet Happy, and then we kind of get his life cooking again." Thi

Everyone’s Saying The Same Thing About Kadarius Toney Being Cut

(Photo by Jason Hanna/Getty Images) After winning back-to-back Super Bowl titles, the Kansas City Chiefs are trying to make history as they head into the 2024 NFL season, with Week 1 underway on Sept. 5 against the Baltimore Ravens in an AFC Championship Game rematch. The Chiefs have a chance to become the first team in NFL history to win three straight Super Bowl titles, and as of now, Patrick Mahomes and company have a solid chance of going the distance and pulling off this incredible feat with a talented squad from top to bottom. However, every year, ahead of the first game of the NFL season, all 32 teams in the league have to reduce their rosters to 53 players, which means many get released and are forced to pursue their professional careers elsewhere. During this period, there are always notable players who are let go, which tends to make headlines, and this year is no different. One of those moves has the Chiefs parting ways with wide receiver Kadarius Toney, according

Chiefs’ final cutdown tracker: Team makes opening moves

By 3 p.m. (Arrowhead Time) on Tuesday, the Kansas City Chiefs must remove 37 players from their 90-man active roster in order to get it down to the in-season limit of 53 players. The team will eventually release a complete list of all of its moves — but until then, news about some of them will trickle out. Chiefs Announce 12 Roster Cuts

(Photo by Jamie Squire/Getty Images) After winning back-to-back Super Bowl titles, the Kansas City Chiefs will head into the 2024 NFL season with high hopes of making league history, as they have the potential to become the first team in the NFL to win three straight Vince Lombardi Trophies. With the chance for the storied franchise to enhance its legacy on an epic scale with another title, the Chiefs want to make sure they have the best roster they can put together before Week 1 to improve their chances of making history with every team in the league gunning for them in 2024. That said, head coach Andy Reid and his coaching staff need to make the right moves moving forward in order to avoid any problems during the 2024 NFL season, as they will be getting the best effort from every team they face on a weekly basis. On Monday, the Chiefs announced 12 roster cuts, bringing the franchise closer to finalizing its roster ahead of the Week 1 showdown against the Baltimore Ravens nex

With new contract done, Creed Humphrey is happy to focus on football

As the Kansas City Chiefs prepared to kick off their preseason finale against the Chicago Bears on Thursday, multiple league insiders had breaking news regarding one of the team's key players. Center Creed Humphrey — a second-round selection of the 2021 draft — had agreed to a new four-year extension that will keep him in Kansas City through the 2028 season. The two-time Pro Bowl selection will reportedly earn $72 million over four years — with $50 million guaranteed. While the full details of Humphrey's new contract remain unknown, that's a record amount for a center. For Humphrey, the chance to play his entire career in Kansas City was an important factor in the negotiations. "I'm in the perfect situation for me," he told reporters on Monday. "I'm playing in a place that I get to call home — and it's been awesome to call home the past four years. I've really enjoyed it. So getting this opportunity is awesome." While any cent

Chiefs Are Releasing Veteran QB

(Photo by Cliff Hawkins/Getty Images) The Kansas City Chiefs have already settled in at quarterback with Patrick Mahomes. However, there's still a chance they bring Book back to their practice squad. The 26-year-old was drafted out of Notre Dame by the New Orleans Saints. He was a fourth-round pick back in 2021 and signed a four-year rookie contract worth roughly over $4.1 million, including a $675K signing bonus. Unfortunately for him, his tenure in the Big Easy was short-lived, as the Saints waived him in 2022. He was later claimed by the Philadelphia Eagles, and they wa

LOOK: JuJu Smith-Schuster is back to practice with the Chiefs

Wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster was back in practice with the Kansas City Chiefs on Monday after agreeing to contract terms that made the reunion official. Smith-Schuster's stint with the New England Patriots lasted just a year — and he now finds himself in a crowded Chiefs wide receiver room. At the podium, linebacker Drue Tranquill shared an amusing story from Monday morning. "Nick [Bolton] was saying he was getting treatment on the table [Monday], and he's like, 'That voice sounds so familiar,' and he looked up. And JuJu's like, 'What's up brother?'" smiled Tranquill. "I look forward to meeting JuJu and getting after it. I hear he's a great player. Him and [Patrick Mahomes] have great chemistry, and I think he missed [a few] games and still almost had 1,000 yards for the team a few years ago. He'll be a key addition for us and help us." Smith-Schuster played 16 games in 2022, missing just one due to a concussion

Analyst Gives Chiefs Rookie A New Nickname

(Photo by Peter Aiken/Getty Images) It's never easy to make a name for yourself in the National Football League, especially if you're not a highly-touted prospect or a first or second-round pick. Notably, that might not be the case with Jaden Hicks. The rookie fourth-round pick has turned some heads in the preseason, and NFL analyst Brian Baldinger has already given him a new nickname. Baldinger watched Hicks dominate in the entire first half of the loss vs. the Chicago Bears, so he stated that it shouldn't take long before people know him as 'Jaden Licks' if he keeps hitting people the way he did in the game. .@Chiefs @JadenHicks11 we might be calling him Jaden Licks pretty soon if he keeps hitting like he did last night #chiefskingdom #BaldysBreakdowns pic.twitter.com/zdlZpE4Y39 — Brian Baldinger (@BaldyNFL) August 23, 2024 The fourth-round selection showed great instincts and defensive recognition both against the pass and the rush, breaking

Let’s Argue: Skyy Moore and Clyde Edwards-Helaire will make the team

Welcome to this week's edition of "Let's Argue," a recurring series about the hot takes, unpopular opinions and wacky predictions of some Kansas City Chiefs' fans. Dave Merritt should coach up the Chiefs' current cornerbacks I can see both sides here. Even while L'Jarius Sneed was on the team, we've seen defensive backs like Jaylen Watson and Joshua Williams step up against elite competition in the biggest moments. Having said that, I don't think it hurts to bring in a veteran — even if it's just as insurance. I really wanted general manager Brett Veach to sign Stephon Gilmore before he went to the Minnesota Vikings. But the only two guys I'd be interested in right now would be Xavien Howard and Adoree Jackson. We should be scared about the Chiefs' secondary Last year, it was all about the wide receivers. This year, cornerbacks will be the hot topic of discussion. But this post lumps the whole secondary together — an

Travis Kelce’s Dad Says He’s ‘Banned For Life’ From X

(Photo by Tim Nwachukwu/Getty Images) The Kansas City Chiefs will walk into the 2024 NFL season as the presumptive favorites to win another Super Bowl despite having already won the previous two championships. At this point, it's hard to imagine another team stopping a Chiefs squad that is able to raise its level of play during the postseason. Patrick Mahomes is the best player in the NFL and there is little debate about that as he's proven time and time again that no deficit is too big for him to overcome. However, Mahomes also has the benefit of having a reliable target like Travis Kelce to lean on in the passing game when things break down in the pocket. Despite getting older, Kelce remains one of the best tight ends in the NFL and there's little reason to doubt that he'll drop off anytime soon. In the meantime, it appears that Kelce's father Ed Kelce has been banned for life on X for recent comments he made about Yemen arms dealers via Ryan Gaydos o

Chiefs’ 53-man roster projection 3.0

The Kansas City Chiefs have concluded their preseason, and general manager Brett Veach will now turn his attention to trimming the roster down to 53 players. That initial roster is due on August 27 at 3 p.m. Arrowhead Time. My projections are based upon things I've seen, heard and hypothesized (Go back and read 2.0 here). Let's dive in one more time: Offense (25) Denny Medley-USA TODAY Sports Quarterbacks (2): Patrick Mahomes, Carson Wentz NO CHANGE. Wire to wire, there was never a question about the quarterbacks. Running backs (2): Isiah Pacheco, Clyde Edwards-Helaire OUT: Deneric Prince The unexpected emergence of Carson Steele from undrafted free agent hopeful to roster lock makes one of these running backs expendable so that the Chiefs can address other positions. Based upon Clyde Edwards-Helaire sitting for the third and final preseason game, the odd man out looks to be Deneric Prince. Prince showed improvement this training camp, and he ran into an unf
