Cornerback Jaylen Watson — who has been on the team’s Active/PUP (physically-unable-to-perform) list since camp began — passed his physical. He came down the hill in pads and a helmet. But this good news was followed by bad news. During practice, four Chiefs were injured. It’s certainly true that having a franchise quarterback is important. Still, teams must continue to churn their rosters through free agency, trades and the NFL Draft. But only the draft keeps a team young. Franchises like the Pitt

Defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo spoke with the media following the session. While his unit deserves a large share of credit for the Chiefs repeating as NFL champions in 2023, he appeared concerned with how camp has gone so far for his side of the ball. “I didn’t think the first day in pads was good for us,” Spagnuolo recalled. “Maybe it was the second day — the day we had the short-yardage goal line. I thought the guys stepped it up after that — after we challenged them in meetings and today was a 10-10-10, so it was more execution and mental. “We’ve got a long way to go. We’ve got a lot of guys banged up. We’re kind of working through that.” S

Drue Tranquill embracing a chance at continuity with Chiefs’ defense

Photo by Mario Hommes/DeFodi Images via Getty Images The veteran linebacker has scheme stability for the first time in his NFL career. When linebacker Drue Tranquill signed a one-year deal with the Kansas City Chiefs before the 2023 season, his best-case scenario was likely winning Super Bowl LVIII and earning a long-term contract offer this offseason. That’s exactly how it played out, but he probably didn’t anticipate that coming from Kansas City. It’s happened many times throughout NFL history: a veteran joining a team for one year, proving himself by helping win a title, then getting compensated for that newfound value elsewhere. Tranquill left such a mark on 2023 that the Chiefs — who have drafted and developed much of their championship core — were willing to offer him a three-year deal to become a more cemented part of the defense. The 28-year-old linebacker has expressed nothing but gratitude for the chance to build on his first year in the system and grow over
