4 things we learned from the Chiefs’ preseason — and 1 we didn’t

On Thursday night, the Kansas City Chiefs finished their preseason schedule with their third straight defeat: a 34-21 home loss to the Chicago Bears. Here are four things we've learned from the preseason — and one thing we'd still like to learn. 1. Carson Wentz will be a good backup for Patrick Mahomes Photo by Courtney Culbreath/Getty Images Head coach Andy Reid loves to have an established veteran backing up his superstar quarterback Patrick Mahomes. He's always been happy to give young players like Tyler Bray, Jordan Ta'amu, Shane Buechele and Chris Oladokun opportunities to develop on his practice squads — but when the chips are down, Reid knows what he wants: an experienced hand to guide his offense. That's something that previous backups Chad Henne and Blaine Gabbert (and even Matt Moore, who filled in for Henne when he was injured in 2019) have all brought to Kansas City. But Wentz brings more than that: he's a significantly better quarterba

Nick Foles Reveals Why Andy Reid Is So Successful

(Photo by David Eulitt/Getty Images) Andy Reid has been an NFL head coach for a long time, dating back to when the Philadelphia Eagles hired him for the 1999 season, but in his time with the Kansas City Chiefs, his stature has grown considerably. He finally won a Super Bowl championship in the 2019 season, and in the past two seasons added two more Vince Lombardi Trophies. It has been a sort of vindication for him after suffering a number of difficult playoff losses in his 14 seasons with the Eagles and his first several years with Kansas City. Former NFL quarterback Nick Foles, who played one year under Reid in Philadelphia, said the coach is successful because he creates an environment where there is plenty of discipline but players are also allowed to have fun and let their personalities show. "He has found that balance, but that's because every day Andy demands that," Foles said on "Green Light with Chris Long." Nick Foles on what makes Andy R

Browns Coach Compares Patrick Mahomes To NBA Star

(Photo by Cooper Neill/Getty Images) Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes has raised the bar around the league from the minute he took over as their starter six years ago. Cleveland Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski recently had high praise for the Super Bowl champion and compared him to one of the NBA's biggest stars, and he's not the first to make the comparison. After watching Mahomes complete a behind-the-back pass to Travis Kelce in a preseason game, Stefanski said that Mahomes is the Stephen Curry of the NFL. "You know how Steph Curry changed basketball? I think Mahomes is changing football," the coach said, via ESPN Bet and 92.3 The Fan. Chiefs Defender Reveals What Practicing Is Like With Patrick Mahomes

(Photo by Courtney Culbreath/Getty Images) Over the past few years, superstar quarterback Patrick Mahomes of the Kansas City Chiefs has become the cream of the crop in the NFL at his position, especially now that Tom Brady is retired and seemingly enjoying retirement at 47 years old. With Brady no longer the league's elite quarterback, Mahomes has taken over as the face of the NFL and the bar for every other quarterback in the league, as he continues to win Super Bowls and set records while playing for legendary head coach Andy Reid in Kansas City. Mahomes and the Chiefs will head into the 2024 NFL season with high hopes of making league history, as they are coming off back-to-back titles and want to become the first team to win three straight Super Bowls, which would strengthen his case for being the greatest quarterback of all time. As Mahomes has built a legacy with the Chiefs since taking over as the starter in Kansas City, he has left quite an impression on his teamma

Andy Reid on Carson Steele: ‘It didn’t look like they wanted to tackle him’

With the Kansas City Chiefs' starters sitting out Thursday night's game, the team closed out the preseason winless after losing to the Chicago Bears, 34-21. Despite the defeat, the game was a crucial last audition for players fighting to make the final 53-man roster ahead of the August 27 deadline. Head coach Andy Reid expressed his satisfaction with the opportunity to evaluate those on the roster bubble, using this final game to gather as much information as possible. "The best part was that we were able to get all the guys in there to have an opportunity to play and put it on tape where Brett [Veach] can evaluate it tomorrow and for the next couple of days," Reid said. The Chiefs' head coach also highlighted the performance of several players who saw extended action, including cornerback Jaylen Watson. The third-year defensive back missed some training camp while on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list. Watson was activated earlier this month an

Analyst Names 6 Teams That Can Dethrone The Chiefs

(Photo by Peter Aiken/Getty Images) The Kansas City Chiefs are going for an unprecedented Super Bowl three-peat this season, but it won't exactly be easy for them to accomplish that task. Winning the last two Super Bowl championships and three in the last five seasons wasn't exactly easy for them either, as they had to overcome sizable deficits each time and huff and puff in crunch time in order to emerge victorious. One analyst doesn't seem too confident that Patrick Mahomes and crew will win it all yet again this season. While on "The Herd w/ Colin Cowherd," Jason McIntyre listed six teams that could dethrone the Chiefs: the Cincinnati Bengals, Detroit Lions, San Francisco 49ers, New York Jets, Houston Texans and Philadelphia Eagles.
