On Wednesday, Mahomes addressed the media frenzy surrounding the clear resemblance between the two quarterbacks, sharing that he also modeled his game after well-known athletes.
“I was that guy,” Mahomes said of Raiola drawing inspiration from him. “I grew up watching players — I loved Alex Rodriguez. I played shortstop and would try to make plays just like him and do stuff like that, and it helped me become the athlete that I am.”
Mahomes acknowledged that inspiring future generations of athletes is one facet of the next phase in his career.

“It’s just telling me I’m getting a little old,” Mahomes joked. “That’s the biggest thing, is that you have these guys that are coming up and doing some of the sidearm stuff and everything like that.”
He continued.
“I know Dylan, I train with him in the offseason (he’s) great kid a great football player and I think he’s gonna make his own stamp on the game and you think you’ve seen that early in his career.”
While Raiola has not explicitly confirmed or denied if Mahomes is the inspiration for his game or style, the three-time Super Bowl MVP understands the head-down mentality adopted by the freshman quarterback.

“I don’t know if whenever you come in as a freshman, [if] you want to be on Twitter and be the part of the team,” Mahomes said of the barrage of online comparisons. “I think he wants it to be about his team and I think that’s the right way to play the quarterback position is that it’s not about you, it’s about going out there and having success as a team.”
