Everything you need to know to watch Kansas City play Cincinnati on Sunday.
The Game
In the NFL’s Week 2, the Kansas City Chiefs host the Cincinnati Bengals on GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium. Kickoff is set for 3:25 p.m. Arrowhead Time. The game will be broadcast on CBS — locally on KCTV/5.
Since the Bengals were originally an expansion franchise for the American Football League in 1968 — and both Kansas City and Cleveland became part of the AFC when their league merged with the NFL in 1970 — these two franchises have a history that stretches back more than five decades.
But right now, the focus is on the three seasons that the Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes and the Bengals’ Joe Burrow have been leading each squad’s offense. The teams have met five times during this period. Cincinnati won the first three matchups — including the 2021 AFC Championship, which kept Kansas City from its third consecutive Super Bowl — but the following postseason, it was the Chiefs’ turn to dash the Bengals’ championship hopes. All four of those games were decided by three points.
But in 2023’s Week 17 — while Burrow was sidelined with an injury — Kansas City collected a 25-17 victory over Cincinnati, securing its eighth consecutive division title and locking the team into the third seed of the AFC playoffs.
Sunday’s game will be the first matchup of the Mahomes-Burrow era that will be played before Week 13, so it's impossible to say if it will be as decisive as the previous five contests. Still, with most of the country watching in a late-afternoon window, both teams are expected to treat it as a game against an AFC contender.
In Week 1, the Chiefs recorded a 27-20 win against another team considered among the AFC’s elite: the Baltimore Ravens. The Bengals, however, are coming off a stunning 16-10 home loss to the New England Patriots.
One way or another, it’s likely to be a game to remember.
