With Brown out for the next few weeks, Kansas City’s offensive coordinator discussed the team’s response.
Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Matt Nagy addressed the media on Tuesday — Day 17 of full-team training camp practices at Missouri Western State University in St. Joseph.
Nagy spoke to the press on a number of topics, beginning with the No. 1 story surrounding the Chiefs at the moment. What measures will Kansas City take now that wide receiver Hollywood Brown is out for the foreseeable future?
Replacing Brown
Brown suffered a sternoclavicular (collarbone) post dislocation during the Chiefs’ preseason loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars. At Tuesday’s padded practice, Nagy and the offensive staff gave veteran receiver Justin Watson more opportunities with the first team.
“J-Wat has been so great,” said Nagy. “He’s invaluable in the fact of just understanding every spot. So for him to kind of know this offense where he’s at, steps right on in. We change the name of the personnel and the guys just keep rolling — but they’re doing a good job.
“I think it’s one of those deals where they just got to know it’s next-man-up mentality. We want Hollywood to get back as soon as he can, but we’ve got to keep rolling — and we’ve got the guys to do it.”
Watson was a pleasant surprise when he made Kansas City’s roster for the 2022 season, sticking around for 2023 and back-to-back Super Bowl victories. Head coach Andy Reid often compliments Watson on his reliability when starting wideouts go down — and it sounds like this situation is no different.
“If you have an opportunity, no matter who you are, where you’re at, whatever role you’re in, you’re trying to make this team,” added Nagy. “For us, we understand that we have our first and second group of guys that you guys have seen out there in different quarters. Whoever that is, go ahead and use the competition to make a play. So I think it could possibly be different every game. We’ll wait and see”
Nagy likes the progress of fullback/running back Carson Steele
Steele is tracking well to make the 53-man roster — and on Tuesday, he even took first-team reps after Isiah Pacheco — and before Deneric Prince. (For the second straight day, Clyde Edwards-Helaire was absent).
Steele’s game performance has translated to practice — and vice versa.
“He’s been progressively getting better and better by the day,” Nagy said of Steele. “And then you saw that with some of the runs he had [against the Jaguars]. We’re staying on top of these guys, making sure that they’re good with the details, with footwork, understanding assignments [and] where they’re at. But what I like about him is right now [is that] he’s doing a lot of good things and being in the right spot at the right time. You can trust him.”
An update on what Nagy’s seen from Xavier Worthy
Worthy has had outings in training camp where he has made flashy plays with quarterback Patrick Mahomes, but it’s fair to say that Tuesday wasn’t necessarily one of those days. Nagy wants Worthy to know that days like that are OK.
“The biggest thing is [Worthy] understanding that everything is not going to be perfect,” said Nagy. “But how do you respond to [it]? For example, [on Tuesday there were] a couple [of] missed connections between him and Pat — downfield throws that they didn’t hit. But you put that on tape, and now they can take that and talk through why it happened. So he’s been good with that.”
Worthy made it obvious that he wanted more playing time in Saturday’s game against the Jaguars, but Nagy maintains he continues to bring a “phenomenal attitude.”
Clearly a member of Kansas City’s top wide receiver trio, Worthy stands to see those reps this weekend against the Detroit Lions — as Reid is expected to give the starters playing time into the second quarter.
