After Friday’s practice, Kansas City’s quarterback gushed over this season’s pass-catchers
Following Friday’s fifth training camp practice at Missouri Western State University in St. Joseph, the Kansas City Chiefs’ star quarterback Patrick Mahomes updated reporters on his receivers' progress thus far.
Hollywood Brown
When the team signed him in free agency, the quarterback knew that Brown was fast. But he has been pleasantly surprised by what a complete receiver he is.
“No one told me like how much he can actually do on the football field,” admitted Mahomes. “He can run those over-the-middle routes. He can run really good routes— and he can run deep. It’s not like ‘fast’ is the only thing that he can do.”
If this sounds like good news for Chiefs fans and a bad dream for the rest of the league, then brace yourself: Mahomes thinks Brown is still ascending as an athlete.
“He keeps getting better and better.”
Rashee Rice
Rice led the team in receiving yards in 2023 — and in his second season, Mahomes thinks he came into camp in even better shape.
“You’ve been able to see how much explosion he has catching the football down the field — and then obviously when he catches the football underneath, he’s getting upfield fast. And I think it’s going to help him a ton.”
According to Mahomes, Rice and Brown have been working out together in the offense — and he appreciates that the older player has taken ownership of his role as the senior wideout.
“They’re just together all the time,” he said. “You always see those videos of them working out, but that’s not even all. They’re always together. They’re always working on routes. They push each other to be great. It’s been cool to see [Rice’s] game evolve [from] being around another vet receiver like that.”
Xavier Worthy
On Friday, the team’s first-round pick was back on the practice field after missing three days with strep throat. Mahomes thinks the rookie is also a complete wideout.
“You can already see the talent,” he observed. “I mean, you all saw the catch that went viral. But just running routes and doing all different types of stuff. He’s another guy that’s not just a speed guy, but someone that plays tough — [and] runs great routes.”
But what Mahomes likes even more is how his pass-catchers — including rookie tight end Jared Wiley — are working together,
“I just like how they’ve worked so far,” he noted. “I mean, we’ve talked through the meetings the right way. After every rep you see me talking to those guys on the sideline. We’re getting on the same page and all those guys have made stuff happen. You’ve seen Wiley make plays. You’ve seen Worthy make plays — and obviously, you’ve seen Hollywood make plays.”
Mahomes thinks general manager Brett Veach has assembled a terrific receiving corps for 2024.
“It’s a great group,” he said. “They all mesh well together. I’m excited for their future — because the sky is the limit.”
