In a prelude to full training camp practices, Kansas City quarterbacks and rookies took the field on Wednesday.
The Kansas City Chiefs got onto the practice field at Missouri Western State University in St. Joseph on Wednesday morning, conducting the first practice session of the team’s 2024 training camp.
Wednesday’s practice was limited to rookies, quarterbacks and a smattering of other players — most of them returning from injuries. There will be three such sessions (the other two on Thursday and Friday mornings) before the rest of the team reports on Friday afternoon. The first full practice (which will be open to the public) will take place on Sunday morning.
Earlier, we published a list of those who were present, which included injured veterans Derrick Nnadi and Jaylen Watson.
Chiefs Studios editor-in-chief Chiefs Studios was there, tweeting a number of observations from the two-hour session — starting with roll call.
I took attendance Wednesday and counted 37 players participating on the field in the first part of #Chiefs training camp. The full rundown is available here:

The non-rookies in attendance (other than the quarterbacks) are OL Chukwuebuka Godrick, TE Gerritt Prince, LB Leo Chenal, S Trey Dean, DE Truman Jones and CB Nazeeh Johnson.— Chiefs Studios (@pgsween) July 17, 2024
DT Derrick Nnadi (triceps) and CB Jaylen Watson (labrum) rehabbed in the tent on Wednesday. DL Charles Omenihu eventually joined his teammates on the field but without a helmet to watch along.— Chiefs Studios (@pgsween) July 17, 2024
It turned out that head coach Andy Reid wasn’t kidding about “easing in” his first-round draft pick, who was kept out of the earlier OTA practices with a hamstring injury.
WR Xavier Worthy was in fact "eased in" as Andy Reid mentioned but did much more than what we saw during OTA looks. Worthy had the play of the day on a 50-50 ball from QB Ian Book going up against Johnson deep down the sideline. He brought in the pass as he fell to the ground.— Chiefs Studios (@pgsween) July 17, 2024
The other pass Worthy caught during 7-on-7 work came on a bad, low pass in the flat by Patrick Mahomes, which Mahomes quickly acknowledged.
"Bad ball, good catch!" said Mahomes.— Chiefs Studios (@pgsween) July 17, 2024
Worthy on his hamstring (left wrap): "It's getting better. As I go, it's going to continue getting better. I just want to be able to be out there with the guys and keep working."
Worthy said he would have played this week in a game situation.— Chiefs Studios (@pgsween) July 17, 2024
Also in the Wednesday mix: former rugby star Louis Rees-Zammit and fourth-round tight end Jared Wiley.
During 7-on-7, Mahomes completed two passes apiece to RB Louis Rees-Zammit and TE Jared Wiley, including a would-be red-zone touchdown. WR Jaaron Hayek (Wentz) and TE Baylor Cupp (Oladokun) also had would-be scores.— Chiefs Studios (@pgsween) July 17, 2024
Mahomes on Wiley: “I anticipate he comes in and learns and gets better and better. The physicality and the size and speed, you see that. Now, we get to test the mental ability and that tight end position is hard in the NFL, especially in coach Reid’s offense. You have to be able…— Chiefs Studios (@pgsween) July 17, 2024
Some of the rookie defenders got in on the action, too.
These passing looks can be tough for breakups, yet we saw four in 7-on-7 on Wednesday: CB Miles Battle got Mahomes, CB Chris Roland-Wallace and S Jaden Hicks got Wentz and S Trey Dean got Oladokun.— Chiefs Studios (@pgsween) July 17, 2024
We have been thinking that Hicks would be seen all over the secondary. So far, that seems right.
It looks like defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo plans to use Hicks all over the field. The fourth-rounder has been widely considered an 'NFL Draft steal' at pick No. 133.— Chiefs Studios (@pgsween) July 17, 2024
"He likes me to do whatever on the field," Hicks said of Spagnuolo, "whether that's cover, playing zone, man, in the box, so it's very versatile.
"I like the fact that I can play wherever. I think I can play wherever, so it's just cool to be able to line up anywhere."— Chiefs Studios (@pgsween) July 17, 2024
And what would a training camp practice be without some cell video?
