On Wednesday, an ESPN+ article considered a group of NFL players who will be free agents after the 2024 season, guessing which ones will get new deals before they begin the final season under their current contracts.


One of them was a Kansas City Chiefs player. ESPN beat reporter Adam Teicher described their situation.

Latest on negotiations: Humphrey could ask for top-of-the-market money for his position. He has been that good since joining the Chiefs as a second-round draft pick in 2021. Humphrey had the second-best pass block win rate for an offensive lineman and the best for a center (98.4%) last season. He also was second (98.1%) in 2022 and led the NFL (97.7%) as a rookie.


The Chiefs haven’t spent big on their own offensive linemen when they’ve come up for new contracts in recent years. Center Mitch Morse and tackle Orlando Brown Jr. are examples of players who signed elsewhere as free agents, though Kansas City gave a big contract to guard Joe Thuney in 2021 when he was a free agent with the New England Patriots and to former Jacksonville Jaguars tackle Jawaan Taylor last year.


Complicating matters is that the Chiefs have two other top players coming up for new contracts in guard Trey Smith and linebacker Nick Bolton.

Many Chiefs fans would agree that Humphrey is the Kansas City player most likely to be extended before the season begins — and my old friend Adam has correctly identified the other two top candidates: Smith and Bolton.


And while I agree that Humphrey is the player most likely to be extended, the wild card is placekicker Harrison Butker. He has quietly become the team’s longest-tenured kicker since Nick Lowery. While the 29-year-old is currently among the league’s elite placekickers, his contract’s average annual value (AAV) of $4.1 million ranks 15th among his peers.


This is pretty simple. The team needs Humphrey. He’s earned a new contract — and with $14.7 million in cap space, Kansas City can afford to give it to him. It would likely run a bit over $6 million AAV. That’s low enough that the team could afford to extend Butker and another player like Humphrey, Smith or Bolton.
