Kansas City’s wide receiver room is set for the season.
The WR room is set for the season.— Cullen Jekel (@DoctorJekel) May 17, 2024
This may be an unpopular opinion amongst Chiefs fans, and I’m not sure why.
In 2023, outside of Rashee Rice, the room was filled with inconsistent play throughout the year. Fortunately, the defense played at a historic level. Led by defensive tackle Chris Jones, the defense held teams under 28 points 21 times (playoffs included), which is the most in NFL history.
Even in the Super Bowl victory over the San Francisco 49ers, the offense stalled for most of the game.
Now, things look entirely different, thanks to the additions of Hollywood Brown and Xavier Worthy. Even with Rice's pending suspension, the room is clearly more talented. Brown’s lone 1,000-yard season came when he played with another MVP quarterback, Lamar Jackson.
Worthy, as a rookie, is more of a mystery, but there’s no denying the potential. As you may have heard, he broke the 40-yard dash combine record by running a 4.21. It’s usually difficult for rookie receivers to pick up Andy Reid’s playbook, but Rice quickly emerged as the top receiver a year ago. With Rice likely to be suspended, one would think Worthy should get plenty of opportunities early on.
The Chiefs’ regular season really doesn’t matter anymore.
The regular season for KC is just extended preseason. The schedule is meaningless and nothing matters until January. Everything else is just media click bait fluff— Retro Dad (@RetroGamerDad17) May 17, 2024
I get what you’re trying to say here.
Whenever the Chiefs lose an early regular-season game, many fans act as though the sky is falling. Remember the awful Week 3 loss to the Indianapolis Colts a couple of years ago? Or the home-opening loss to the Detroit Lions just this past season?
The Chiefs went on to win the Super Bowl each of those seasons. But in the regular season, you must win enough games to make the playoffs and even more to win the division.
The regular season is where you build habits, whether good or bad. The Chiefs have had a lot of good ones in recent years.
Joe Burrow and the Bengals aren’t scoring 20 in Week 2.
Our defense will hold burrow to under 20 week 2.— Dynasty B-rad (@VolChiefMan31) May 17, 2024
Joe Burrow has faced the Chiefs four times in his career. The former Heisman winner has a record of 3-1 in those matchups.
Holding Burrow to under 20 will be a tall task, considering the Chiefs haven’t been able to do that. To be fair, in their last meeting, Burrow was only able to lead his offense to 20 points in the 2023 AFC Championship Game.
That was the best iteration of the Chiefs defense Burrow faced to date. The unit he faces Week 2 may be even better. Despite the loss of L’Jarius Sneed, Kansas City brings back continuity, and they’re very young with room to grow. Cornerback Trent McDuffie is coming off an All-Pro season, defensive end George Karlaftis looks to build off his first double-digit sack season, and linebacker Nick Bolton returns more seasoned in his role.
None of this means they’ll hold Burrow and company to under 20 points, but that wouldn’t surprise me in the slightest.
Chiefs will win the AFC West... with four to five losses.
Chiefs will win the division but have 4 or 5 losses.— Fat Sayjak (@fatsayjak) May 17, 2024
In the six seasons Mahomes has been the starter, the Chiefs have lost four or more games in more than half. So, assuming they’ll lose four or five games isn't far-fetched.
The better topic here is how many games the Chiefs could lose while still winning the division. I think they could lose seven or eight games and still win this particular division in 2024.
Obviously, that wouldn’t be ideal if you’re trying to win the No. 1 seed in the AFC.
