2024 NFL Free Agency: Best Fits for Top 6 Remaining Free Agents | The 33rd Team

STEPHON GILMORE, CORNERBACK

FIT: KANSAS CITY CHIEFS

Stephon Gilmore will turn 34 before Week 2, and cornerback is a position where players usually don’t play long into their 30s. But Gilmore was rock solid for the Dallas Cowboys last season, starting all 17 games.

While he isn’t the same athlete he was coming out of South Carolina, he is still an incredibly savvy player who can play on the outside and in the slot.

Teams needing a one-year rental at cornerback should be thrilled to sign Gilmore, and the Kansas City Chiefs are the best possible fit. The loss of L’Jarius Snead looms large, and the Chiefs hope Jaylen Watson or Joshua Williams can step up in his absence. Gilmore would provide a baseline of production for a team leaning more on its defense to win games.

There has been a slight decline in Gilmore’s game during the past few years, but that is expected for a cornerback entering his mid-30s. According to Pro Football Reference, Gilmore allowed a passer rating of 82.7 last season, the highest of his career.

However, that is still well above average for a starting cornerback.

Gilmore’s addition could be huge for a team like the Chiefs, which is searching for one more starting-caliber cornerback. It also doesn’t hurt that he has plenty of experience playing in bad-weather games from his time in Buffalo and New England, which is a nice little bonus.

The Chiefs trying to complete the three-peat, so adding a reliable veteran such as Gilmore is a no-brainer.

Sando: The move from each NFL team’s offseason that I liked the most | The Athletic (nytimes.com)

Kansas City Chiefs

Keeping Chris Jones was critical for the defense, even if it meant trading L’Jarius Sneed to the Titans instead of paying him as well. Kansas City has picked its spots in terms of making some moves for the long term (trading Tyreek Hill) and others for the short term (opening the checkbook for Jones). It’s hard to dispute Jones’ value to the defense, especially in critical situations. Keeping him gives the Chiefs their best shot at winning a third consecutive Super Bowl. The Chiefs’ recent track record developing cornerbacks suggests they’ll be able to replace Sneed.

2024 NFL win totals, AFC West: Chiefs charge for three-peat, Jim Harbaugh’s value massive for Chargers | CBS Sports

AFC West

Kansas City Chiefs

Over 11.5 (-110) / Under 11.5 (-110)

Pretty simple rule here: Bet against Andy Reid in Kansas City at your own peril. Last year was the first time since taking over in K.C. that Big Red managed to actually go UNDER his win total, and he did it by just a half-game, winning 11 games with some inexplicable losses (at home on Christmas to the Raiders, at home to start the season as defending champs) and with the worst offense the Chiefs have had since he took over (I think). They lost L’Jarius Sneed, but beefed up the receiving corps by adding Marquise Brown in free agency and Xavier Worthy in the first round of the draft. Both guys bring a much-needed element of speed to the roster, with the Chiefs largely unable to stretch the field since Tyreek Hill was traded to Miami. I expect a bounce-back season from this offense. Even though the division is better with Jim Harbaugh taking over for Brandon Staley and the Chiefs have a tough, first-place schedule with everyone gunning to dethrone their chance at a three-peat, this is a pretty clear overlook for me. There’s no need to bet it now, though, as I highly doubt we see the actual number creep up.

Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes Will ‘Definitely’ Avoid Roasts After Tom Brady Netflix Show | Bleacher Report

Appearing on The Pat McAfee Show, Mahomes said he “will definitely be staying away” from roasts.

The Brady roast on Netflix turned out to be a massive business success for everyone involved. It’s unclear how much he was paid to take part in the event, but he, along with his production company, were credited as executive producers and will serve as executive producers for future roasts on the streaming service.

It doesn’t seem like the event was great for people in Brady’s immediate circle. The seven-time Super Bowl champion has said he was fine with the jokes that were aimed at him, but he “didn’t like the way that it affected my kids.”

Kansas City Chiefs: G Trey Smith

Between being on great teams throughout his career and consistent presence on Kansas City’s offensive line since getting drafted there, Smith not being named to an All-Pro team nor a Pro Bowl is mind-blowing.

The 24-year-old has earned PFF grades in the low 70s during the regular season every year, including a 72.2 mark last fall.

Daniel Jones has no doubt he’ll be ready Week 1; QB wasn’t ‘fired up’ Giants looked at drafting QB | NFL.com

Coming off a torn ACL suffered in November, the New York Giants quarterback participated in 7-on-7 drills this week during OTAs. Asked Thursday if there are any doubts that he’ll be ready to face Minnesota to open the 2024 campaign, Jones responded: “I don’t have any doubt about it.”

Head coach Brian Daboll said the Giants are still taking it slow with the QB coming off injury, keeping him out of full team drills.

“He looks good. We’re not putting him in some team stuff, but he’s making progress. So, that’s why we’ve got him in 7-on-7. ... We’ll take it day by day. If he can do more, he’ll do more,” Daboll told reporters on Thursday, via Ralph Vacchiano of Fox Sports.

Eagles sign WR John Ross to 1-year deal after tryout | ESPN

It’s another twist in a career that has been full of them. Ross was selected ninth overall by the Cincinnati Bengals in the 2017 draft after racking up over 1,100 receiving yards and a Pac-12-leading 19 touchdowns for Washington the season prior. He was considered the top receiver in the draft by some within the Eagles organization but was off the board before they got on the clock at No. 14, where they ended up taking defensive end Derek Barnett.

Ross, who ran a then-record-breaking 4.22-second 40-yard dash at the scouting combine, dealt with a litany of injuries on the pro level that limited him to an average of seven games played over his first four seasons. His best year came in 2019 when he caught 28 balls for 506 yards in 11 games.

He joined the New York Giants in 2021 and had 11 catches for 224 yards in 10 games. He signed a futures deal with the Kansas City Chiefs in January 2023 before announcing his retirement later that year.

Chiefs News: Andy Reid weighs in on kickoff rules, potential returners

With new kickoff rules taking effect this season, Kansas City Chiefs special teams coordinator Dave Toub has even more flexibility in play calls, given the roster’s depth. In place of Toub, who wasn’t available on Wednesday, head coach Andy Reid spoke about the new rules and what they may mean for the Chiefs in 2024.

“It’s going to be interesting,” previewed Reid. “There seem to be some options that you can do with [the new rules] — a little bit like the run game, potentially… There are things that you can maneuver around with.”

According to the new directions, a team is allowed up to two returners lined up between the 20-yard line and the goal line. A player such as wide receiver Justyn Ross could be one of those two return men, with rookie wide receiver Xavier Worthy being the other.

Reid explained that opening up the field with two explosive receivers could allow for more breakout plays.

“Having the two-up backs and then the two receivers — two guys receiving the ball — it opens up some options that maybe the other group didn’t have.”
